4 Ways to Transport a Kayak Safely

1. Pad It Up

Foam pads are the least expensive way to safely transport a kayak. The pads, also called blocks and saddles, are placed between the kayak and the top of a vehicle, cradling the boat. The kayak is then secured to the vehicle with tie-down straps and bungee cords. Loop the tie-down straps across the kayak and through the vehicle's windows. The bungee cords are used to secure the kayak's bow and stern to the vehicle's bumpers. This method is generally not recommended if you're driving at highway speeds, as the kayak could shift or lift.

2. Rack, Rack, Rack Your Boat

Roof racks are a safe and convenient way to transport your kayak. Racks consist of a system of bars that attach to your vehicle's rain gutters or the sections of frame above the doors. Racks are designed for specific vehicle makes and models, ensuring a custom fit. Roof rack attachments give you the option of hauling multiple kayaks and adding protective cushioning. Loading a kayak onto a roof rack is typically a quick process, and can often be done by one person. Generally, kayaks need to be loaded right-side up on a roof rack, and can collect heavy water if left uncovered. Roof racks have weight limits, so invest in a cockpit cover for travel. Expect your gas mileage efficiency to decrease by about 20 percent and your vehicle to handle somewhat differently when you're using a roof rack.

3. Trailing Along

A kayak trailer is an easy way to transport your kayak without abusing your back. A lightweight, galvanized boat trailer will be less expensive, but the trailer needs to be weighted to prevent dangerous swaying at high speeds in windy conditions. A standard boat trailer might also need to be modified to carry a kayak. A trailer is the most convenient method of long-distance transport, because it entails little lifting of the kayak and doesn't require climbing on top of a car.

4. Cart It With You

A kayak cart transports your kayak from your vehicle to the water so you don't have to carry the heavy watercraft yourself. Kayak carts are toted in your vehicle, and some fold into compact configurations. Kayak carts can be used to safely transport your kayak over uneven ground and through sand. Using a cart prevents the back strain and falls that can occur when you're carrying a kayak for long distances over rough terrain.
