Low thyroid, or hypothyroidism, happens when the thyroid gland cannot create enough of the thyroid hormone to keep the body functioning at normal levels. The American Thyroid Association recognizes many reasons why this occurs, and indicates that there is no cure once the problem is diagnosed. There are medical as well as alternative treatment options available for increasing thyroid function to normal levels. The Mayo Clinic notes that natural remedies may be useful when used in conjunction with thyroid medications.

Iodine Supplements

The Mayo Clinic indicates that iodine is essential in the production of thyroid hormones. The body does not naturally produce iodine, so it must come from a balanced diet. Dairy products, kelp and saltwater fish are excellent sources of iodine. Iodized table salt is another dietary source. The International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ICCIDD) recommends 120 mcg of iodine a day for women and 150 mcg a day for men to maintain healthy iodine levels in the body. A consultation with a physician and nutritionist is recommended prior to adding iodine to your daily diet for treating low thyroid.

Wild Oats

Wild oats (Avena sativa) is a grain with a high content of iron, zinc and manganese. Thyroid-Guide.org indicates that this herb has restorative properties that stimulate the thyroid gland. Take Avena sativa with plenty of water and engage in daily physical activity to further stimulate the gland to process enough hormones.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy, an alternative approach to pharmacology, may offer relief as well. A homeopath, after doing an extensive interview with the patient, can create a natural plan with natural medicines to treat the disorder. When natural medications are not indicated, a homeopath may conduct thyroid stimulating procedures. According to Nativeremedies.com, this may include tapping the thyroid gland several times a day and soaking the feet in sea saltwater, a natural source of iodine. Although speculative and without scientific evidence, the intended outcome of homeopathic remedies is a healthy thyroid gland.
