Goalies put an incredible amount of pressure on their skates because of their position on the ice, slamming them against the post and digging them deep into the ice. They also have to deal with pucks hitting their skates at upwards of 90 mph on a regular basis. Goaltenders should inspect their skates every week and repair them when necessary.
Step 1
Examine the outside of the skate boot to determine if there is any misshape in the boot. This can occur due to kicking away a puck at an awkward angle. This can dent the skate, altering how it fits your foot and your mobility while wearing it. If it is dented, use a rubber mallet or hammer to return the skate to its original shape.
Step 2
Remove any rivets that were knocked out of place. Do this by using the rivet wrench. Replace with the same or new rivets, depending on if the original rivets are damaged. If they are not damaged at all, replace them in the position they are supposed to be in.
Step 3
Replace your skate laces every few months. When pucks, sticks and skates are constantly hitting your laces, they will eventually wear out and even rip in half. Replace the laces by using needle-nose pliers to pull them out of the holes and shove the new laces through.
Step 4
Sharpen your goalie skates every two or three games. Always bring them to a professional or an equipment manager to sharpen them. Sharpening your skates often will help your grip on the ice when you're sliding back and forth through the crease, and will help keep you in control of your positioning.
