Men and women have had different ideas of skin and total body care for a long time. No matter the opinions, it is important for men to take care of their skin, hair, nails and fitness in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Grooming and physical fitness make up the essentials to proper body care for men. Following a few daily steps will keep you looking and feeling your best.

Step 1

Cleanse your face daily to eliminate bacteria, dead skin cells and excess oil. These three elements are culprits to acne flareups and need to be cleansed away from the skin and pores. Cleansers containing salicylic acids are ideal for clearing blocked pores and preventing infection and acne while clearing up any blemishes.

Step 2

Bathe daily with a body wash or soap designed for men. There are several products on the market that nix the sweet pea smell for a more manly scent. Men tend to sweat more than women, so daily bathing is important to prevent growth of bacteria under the arms and other sweat gland locations.

Step 3

Shampoo and condition hair regularly. Oily hair should be washed daily while drier hair may be washed two to three times weekly. Use a conditioner if dealing with dry, brittle hair to add in moisture and soften the hair shaft.

Step 4

Shave daily after facial cleansing. Use a razor with a new blade and lather shaving gel onto your chin, upper lip and jawline. Hold the razor at a slight angle and shave with the hair growth. This will minimize irritation to the skin and prevent ingrown hairs.

Step 5

Drink eight to 10 glasses of water per day to keep hydrated and remove toxins from your body. Hydration is key to skin and hair health and overall weight control. It also eliminates environmental toxins from the body by flushing the kidneys and liver, optimizing each organ's function.

Step 6

Exercise three to four times a week for 30 or more minutes each session. Keeping your body fit and strong adds to your overall health and well-being. Weight training is ideal for bulking up muscle while jogging and running build endurance.

Step 7

Trim and file fingernails and toenails weekly to prevent ingrown nails and peeling cuticles. Cut nails straight across and file the edges to a rounded shape. This not only prevents ingrown nails but also adds to the well-groomed look.

Step 8

Eat a well-balanced diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and low-fat dairy. Antioxidants found in fresh fruit and vegetables are important to healthy immune system function and skin care while protein from meat helps to keep muscle growth in check. Whole grains support your digestive function while dairy keeps bones and teeth healthy.
