Finding time to work out three times a week is hard enough. Going through your entire daily beauty routine to combat sweat-dampened locks--every single time you hit the gym--is too much. Combat "gym hair" with a bit of preparation. A little practice, five minutes, a brush and a hair dryer is all you need to restore hair to pre-gym condition.
Step 1
Prep yourself for easy post-workout hair care by pulling your hair back from your face and off the nape of your neck when you exercise. Either put it in a loose ponytail or use a wide headband to hold your hair back. A wide cotton headband can also help absorb sweat. Use hairpins or barrettes to hold bangs off your forehead if necessary.
Step 2
Blot sweat off your forehead, hairline and neck after working out. If you have time to shower, wet your hair down and go through a full beauty routine, go for it--otherwise, pile your hair on top of your head and hold it in place with a claw clasp or put on a shower cap before showering to make sure your hair stays dry.
Step 3
Blow-dry any sweaty portions of your hair one medium section at a time, focusing on the nape of your neck and your hairline. Wrapping each section of hair around a round brush that allows for airflow through the brush will help your hair dry faster and add extra body.
Step 4
Apply a gentle spritz of styling spray when your hair is almost completely dry. Finish blow-drying to help smooth your style in place.
Tips and Warnings
- If swimming is part of your workout, wet your hair down thoroughly before taking a dip--this helps keep it from absorbing chlorine--and apply a leave-in conditioner, too. Shampoo or at least thoroughly rinse your hair in lukewarm water immediately after leaving the pool, then style as usual. Apply a leave-in conditioner before using a steam bath or sauna, too. If you end up with an extremely sweaty or oily scalp after working out and blow-drying doesn't do the trick, try a dry shampoo; just dust it on, then comb it out.
