Generic Zocor (simvastatin) is a type of medication known as a statin. This medication works by lowering the bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) in your blood. Lowering your cholesterol can help prevent heart disease and hardening of the arteries, conditions that can lead to heart attack, stroke and vascular disease, according to Drugs.com. This medication should be used in conjunction with exercise, diet and lifestyle modification. There are some side effects of generic Zocor that users should be aware of.
Gastrointestinal Discomfort
You may experience mild stomach pain, gas, bloating, stomach upset, and heartburn, states Drugs.com. Taking this medication with food may help alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort. Eating a diet of bland foods, while avoiding spicy or fried foods, may help lessen these side effects. Ask your physician if you can use an over-the-counter antacid, such as Maalox or Mylanta, for discomfort. If gas and bloating become bothersome, an antigas medication such as simethicone may be helpful. Nausea, constipation and diarrhea can occur while taking generic Zocor. For constipation relief, consider a diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and fiber. Increasing daily water consumption and exercising regularly may help with constipation. If diarrhea becomes severe, contact your physician. You may be at risk for dehydration.
Rhabdomyolosis
Generic Zocor may lead to the development of a muscle disease known as rhabdomyolosis, which can cause kidney damage. You should tell your doctor right away if you feel any muscle weakness, pain or tenderness, especially if you also have a fever or general body discomfort, reports PDR Health. Other signs and symptoms associated with rhabdomyolosis include dark, cola-colored urine, fatigue, and muscle cramping. Your physician should order blood-draws every three months while you're taking this medication, in order to monitor your cholesterol levels and kidney function.
Allergic Reaction
In rare cases, generic Zocor has caused an allergic reaction in some users. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; or swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat.
