We live in a world full of pollution. Toxins are in our air, food and water, so a buildup of these in the body is almost unavoidable. Followers of alternative medicine are well aware of the benefits of detoxification, and a fresh start to any health plan usually requires a clean system. The use of homeopathy to detox can be a safe and effective method in eliminating much of what we are exposed to in the course of our daily lives.

Homeopathic Medicine

According to the Homeopathic College of Canada, "Homeopathy is the fastest growing system of medicine in the world, and after conventional medicine, the most widely used."
Homeopathy is a holistic form of medicine that works on the principle that the mind and body are connected, and the whole person is treated, not just the symptoms or illness. Homeopathy in general is safe, flexible and gentle so it can be used by many people with ease. The basis of this system of medicine is to help the body heal with its own natural defense system. This healing power is called the vital force, and the purpose of any homeopathic treatment is to balance this force in an individual.

Why Detox?

The vital force can be disturbed by stress, chronic illness, environmental toxins, poor diet or consumption of chemicals in food or drugs. All of this can build up and create an over-loaded cellular matrix. The use of homeopathic remedies can be combined in a detoxifying treatment or regime to help rid the body of these elements.

Homeopathic Detox Programs

There are several programs readily available on the open market as of 2010. Each program might be a combination of individual remedies or several different formulas, and usually has a specified timeline in the instructions. A true homeopathic treatment will involve the whole body, and the state of health of the individual must be considered before any treatment is assumed. So when self-treating with a detox program, it is advisable to discuss any concerns with your doctor before starting treatment, especially if there is a chronic illness or pregnancy to be considered.

Effective Low Dosage

The frequency of dosage can vary based on the individual product, but in general a homeopathic remedy of any sort must be taken regularly, several times a day to be most effective. By having the medicine in the system continuously, more absorption can take place and more vital force can be regained.
Each remedy has been proven over the development of the system of homeopathy based on the rule of like treats like--the Law of Similars. The idea is that a symptom can be cured by an element that actually causes a similar symptom in higher doses. So using a fairly weak amount of this ingredient will help trigger the body's defenses against it, aiding in a balance of energy and healing. This is why homeopathic doses are minute and relatively safe.

Detox Herbs and Diets

The mainstream medical community readily warns against strong herbal intestinal cleansing, detox or fasting diets because of the lack of nutrients ingested for a prolonged period. Plus many of these treatments have extreme laxative effects that can cause dehydration and irritation to the bowels. If you are considering doing a detoxifying diet or herbal program, be warned that there are some risks.

Homeopathic Difference

Homeopathic detoxification is different from other herbal treatments and detox diets because of the nature of the homeopathic methodology. All ingredients are used in minuscule amounts, because the fundamental value of the remedies in homeopathy is based on the low dosage and the individual symptoms or systems to be treated.
The goal of any homeopathic detoxifying program or product is to aid the body's cells in ridding any buildup of toxins. The whole body is considered and each organ and supporting system is targeted with specific remedies; they are combined together to work in harmony.

Detox Remedies

An example of a homeopathic detox supplement might include up to 20 different remedies, each targeting an organ or system in the body that is designed to aid in tonification and elimination. Some of these elements are diuretics to help push fluid through the kidneys, systemic cleansers to aid in cellular elimination, or stimulants to enhance energy. Other remedies in a detox supplement may be anti-inflammatory in nature to reduce tissue swelling, because this often times is a source of toxic storage. Some treatments may also include ingredients that are antibacterial, to ideally prevent any onset of illness due the lowered immunity of a potentially toxic system.
Warning: In general there will be an increase in elimination through urine, stools, and sweat when doing any detox program.
