4 Ways to Prevent Fungal Sinus Infections

1. Don't Feed the Fungus

To prevent fungal sinus infections, as well as other yeast and fungal infections, diet is imperative. First, take all the refined sugar out of your diet, including all those processed foods. Most have chemical additives you don't want anyway. Ditch the sugary packaged snacks, and for goodness sakes don't feed them to your kids. Even if you are the one suffering from the sinus infection, filling your kids with packaged cookies full of artificial flavors and colors and trans fat is not doing them any favors. It's just suppressing their immune system and sets them up for a lifetime of fighting the same thing you are. Remember, the only blue food you or your kids should be eating is a blueberry. The colorful fruits and veggies were made that way to entice you to eat them, the natural ones and the unnatural ones. Eat the purple cabbage, blueberries, green beans, yellow squash, orange carrots and red beets that you find in the produce department instead of the rainbow fruity ring crunch you find in the cereal isle.

2. Control Humidity

Fungus grows in too humid conditions and our sinuses get dried out in too dry conditions. Finding the right balance to prevent fungal sinus infections is difficult. You want your home to be dry enough to prevent mold and fungus overgrowth, while humid enough not to dry out and injure your sinuses. Using a Humidex, which is a humidity control system, can keep your home at a comfortable humidity level while removing some of the spores that may cause infection. It uses a humidistat control which you can set at your comfort level. It then forces the extra humidity out of your home and into the outside air. Experts recommend keeping the humidity between 40 and 50 percent for the most comfortable living conditions.

3. Stay Away From Sinus Irritants

Chronic sinus suffers may have to avoid certain activities to prevent fungal sinus infections. For example, you notice an increase in infection after swimming or diving. Diving often forces water into the sinuses where the chlorine and contaminates then can cause irritation and infection. Air travelers may also notice a problem. As the plane takes off and lands an air bubble may get trapped and expand in the sinus, causing pain and irritation. Avoid these activities, as well as other sinus irritants, such as cigarette smoke, pollen and animal dander, especially if you are allergic.

4. Boost Your Immune System

Of course, to help prevent fungal sinus infections you can also boost your immune system. Keeping a regular sleep schedule, and getting proper exercise both help your body work the way it was designed to. If you are starting an exercise program, be sure to check with your doctor. Only he knows your condition and how much you should attempt to start with.
