If you're having a particularly hard day, don't reach for a candy bar or a cigarette to unwind. Instead, eat a food that provides natural stress relief. Although you may want to reach for something unhealthy when you're feeling like you've got the whole world on your shoulders, eating a healthy food packed with vitamins and minerals will help your body maintain stability through a difficult emotional period.

Sushi

The next time you're feeling emotionally drained and full of stress, reach for a Japanese take-out menu. Sushi may relieve stress because it contains serotonin and melatonin, says Lisa Lillien in "Parents Connect." Additionally, the rice in sushi provides a balance of carbohydrates, fiber and protein. Additionally, fish is high in B6 and B12, which may help enhance your mood and fend off depression. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not eat sushi.

Almonds

Almonds may be effective in reducing stress in some individuals, says Sabrina Rogers in "Ask Men." Almonds contain vitamin E, vitamin B2, zinc and magnesium. Vitamin B2 helps produce serotonin in the body, vitamin E helps reduce free radicals in the body to reduce stress. Zinc may also help reduce stress, says Rogers. Almonds are high in saturated fat, so eat about one handful per day for best results.

Papaya

Papaya, and other orange-colored fruits and vegetables are high in vitamin A, vitamin C and folate, says nutritionist, Dr. Rovenia Brock. Vitamins will provide more energy to help combat stress, while folate may help enhance the mood, says Dr. Brock. Other orange-colored foods that may help combat stress include orange, yellow and red bell peppers. Eat these foods as often as necessary throughout the day to help reduce stress.
