Slowpitch softball is usually a very high-scoring game that features a lot of long hits. Hitters take their stance in the batter's box, wait for a pitch they can hammer and then trot around the bases after the ball disappears over the fence. Slowpitch softball will never be a game dominated by pitchers. However, smart pitchers can get the hitter off balance from time to time by throwing curves, backhands and other offspeed pitches.

Straightball Technique

Pitchers may want to try to get out in front of the hitter by throwing a straight ball early in the count. This can be an easy pitch to hit, but if the hitter is known for taking a strike, the pitcher may want to get out in front of the batter by throwing a straight ball over the corner or the middle of the plate. To do this, put the thumb of your pitching hand across the laces and your forefinger and middle finger directly underneath. When you release the ball, snap your wrist to keep it flying on target.

Curve Ball Technique

Hold the ball with your thumb in the middle of the horseshoe part of the softball. Your thumb should be between the seams. Put your forefinger and middle finger on the opposite side. Bring your arm back and make sure you do not break your wrist as you deliver the ball. The pressure you put on the ball with your middle finger will cause it to curve because it will be on the ball longer. This pressure will cause a right-hander's pitch to curve from right to left and a left-hander's pitch to curve from left to right.

Backhand Technique

Grip the ball with four fingers on the ball and have those digits face the batter. Your thumb will be next to your four fingers, not on the opposite side. As you reach back to launch the pitch toward home, cock your wrist and prepare to launch it. Introduce a spinning motion on the ball as you let go of the pitch. This spin can force the batter to hit nothing but ground balls unless he hits it squarely.
