An athlete who can jump high has an advantage in some aspects of various sports. In basketball, a player who can jump high will have an increased likelihood of being able to haul down a rebound. In volleyball, the ability to jump can help players block shots from the opposing team at the net. There are exercise tips that can help players increase their ability to jump high. This is also known as increasing the player's vertical leap.
Scissor Jumps
This is an exercise that does not require any special equipment. Start with your feet slightly less than shoulder-width apart. One foot should be in front of your body and one foot should be directly under you, supporting your weight. Jump from the one foot beneath you as high as you can, moving slightly forward so that you land on your other foot and move the foot you jumped from ahead of you so that now your feet position are reversed. Jump from the other foot, which should be beneath you, as high as you can, repeating the motion. In this way, you are making exaggerated jumps from alternating feet. Jump as quickly as you can so that your feet spend as little time as possible on the ground.
Step Over
This exercise requires a step box or some other type of exercise box that can support your weight. Stand beside the box with your left foot directly beside the box. Step up with your left foot onto the box, jumping with your right foot. Once on the box, quickly step off to the left, then jump back onto the box by jumping with your left foot. Keep moving quickly. Your feet should spend as little time on the ground or the box as possible. Perform 10 repetitions of this exercise to give your muscles a workout that will help improve your vertical leap.
Skaters
This exercise gets its name because the movements performed in it resemble the motions a speed skater makes with exaggerated side-to-side swings. A skater is an exercise that is performed with two cones set up about two feet apart. If no cones are available, anything that serves as a spot locator will suffice. Stand behind the first cone or marker and jump sideways so that you are behind the second marker. When jumping to the left, use only your right foot, and vice versa. Jump as high as you can with each leap and use your arms to assist your jumps. Jump quickly so that your feet spend as little time on the ground as possible.
