1. Set Goals for Teaching Pre-Natal Yoga
Prenatal yoga is rapidly becoming the thing to do during pregnancy. Prenatal yoga helps tone muscles during pregnancy, keeping women healthier. It also teaches women how to breathe and meditate, which are important skills during childbirth and after the baby comes. It also helps prepare a pregnant woman's body for the rigors of childbirth. Finally, it gives pregnant moms a community to go to, so that they can share questions and comments about their condition.
2. Like and Have a Respect for Yoga!
Before you become a prenatal yoga instructor, you'll have to really enjoy yoga. Most certification companies will prefer you have taken many years of yoga so you know the standard poses and can answer general questions about yoga. You'll also have to like working with pregnant moms. These moms will have many questions about what's going on with their bodies and what their bodies can and can't do, especially during the different trimesters. Prenatal yoga is a lot lighter than regular yoga, since you're working with pregnant women. In prenatal yoga, the poses are easier and there's a lot more mediation time. If you're looking to teach more intense classes, teaching prenatal yoga may not be for you.
3. Get Certified
There are many companies that now certify prenatal yoga instructors including, Mamaste Yoga and Whole Birth Prenatal Yoga. Certification allows you to teach more complete classes, which helps your students. You'll be better able to answer questions and be better able to deal with the differences in a pregnant woman's body. In addition, if you're certified, you'll have an easier time getting a job at a birthing or health facility. If you're opening your own prenatal yoga business, certification will get you students and give you some deference in the birthing community. You'll need to follow course curriculum, observe prenatal yoga classes, teach classes with another instructor and you may even have to take an exam.
4. Find a Program Registered With the Yoga Alliance
If you're going to become certified, you'll want your certification program registered with the Yoga Alliance. The Yoga Alliance forces certification programs and instructors to follow certain guidelines so there's a standard for yoga instructors to follow. If your certification program is registered with the Yoga Alliance, you'll get to put extra initials after your name and students will recognize you really know how to teach prenatal yoga.
