Adults aren't the only ones who can benefit from massage--infants, too, can have significant health benefits after receiving massage. Infant massage has been done for many years, particularly in Asia, Africa and parts of Europe. Despite how simple and easy infant massage is, many Americans are still unaware of its benefits. Before doing infant massage, it's important to consult a doctor or take a course in infant massage.

Better Recovery

According to "Massage Today" magazine, premature infants who receive massage generally recovery faster from health problems. This is because infant massage can reduce pain in premature babies, decrease stress levels and help them heal faster. It can also help underweight infants gain weight faster by speeding up their gut mobility and making them hungrier.

Improved Sleep

The act of massaging a baby can be so relaxing when done right, that it can put a baby right to sleep. Babies need to sleep many hours during both the day and night, waking up often to feed. Yet some babies have trouble sleeping because of physical discomfort or surrounding noises. Parenthood.com states that if a parent or caretaker gently massages a baby, especially the tummy area, the baby may be able to sleep better, which can be a blessing for both the baby and the parents.

Fewer Digestive System Problems

Infants who receive massage experience fewer digestive system problems, according to "Massage Today." The magazine states that common problems for babies such as gas, constipation and even colic, which is sometimes due to gastrointestinal problems, can be relieved through infant massage. While infant massage can be done on the face, arms or legs, massaging gently on the tummy is best for reducing digestive problems.

Stronger Immune System

Babies who receive massages regularly have stronger immune systems and are less likely to get sick. Parenthood.com explains that massage increases blood flow throughout the body, which stimulates the nervous system and strengthens the immune system. Babies have naturally weak immune systems since their bodies are not fully developed, yet doing 15 minutes of gentle massage daily can protect the baby from things like colds, flus and infections as he grows bigger and stronger.
