Fish oil has many advantages for your health because it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3s). Omega-3s naturally occur in oily, cold-water fish like salmon, tuna, halibut, mackerel, herring and sardines as well as in flaxseed and flaxseed oil, walnuts and fish oil supplements. Omega-3s in fish occur as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating fish at least twice a week to benefit from omega-3s; however, individuals with certain medical conditions or who are unable to consume fish oil directly from fish may benefit from omega-3 fish oil supplements.

Improve Blood Lipids

According to the Mayo Clinic and University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), EPA and DHA in fish oil supplements can reduce triglycerides, a type of blood lipid (fat) that increases the risk of heart disease when too high. Another advantage of a fish oil supplement may be its ability to increase the "good cholesterol," HDL.

Promote Heart Health

There are many advantages associated with fish oil and omega-3s for heart health. The AHA says omega-3s from fish decrease the risk of abnormal heart beats, lower triglycerides, decrease high blood pressure and slow the formation of plaque, a substance that clogs arteries and is associated with heart attack and stroke. The Mayo Clinic says consumption of fish or fish oil supplements may work with heart medications to improve health, and in addition to reducing sudden death associated with heart disease, they may also decrease the risk of mortality.

Prevent Diabetic Complications

The positive effects of omega-3s on triglycerides and cholesterol levels are particularly beneficial for diabetics. According to the UMMC, diabetics often have high triglycerides and low levels of HDL, which increase the risk of heart disease and complicate diabetes. Diabetics should be aware that high doses of omega-3s can elevate blood sugar, so it is prudent to talk with a physician prior to taking a supplement.

Improve Arthritis

The effect of omega-3s on rheumatoid arthritis appears to be positive. According to the Mayo Clinic, omega-3s can decrease symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis like joint pain and stiffness. The UMMC says individuals may be able to decrease the dosage of traditional medications used to treat rheumatoid arthritis when omega-3 supplements are taken.

Additional Advantages

Fish oil and omega-3s are being extensively studied for their role in treating multiple diseases. Scientific research is limited, but the following conditions may benefit from fish oil supplementation: asthma, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, certain cancers, Crohn's disease, cystic fibrosis, dementia, depression, eczema, lupus, psoriasis, osteoporosis, ADHD, irritable bowel disorder and macular degeneration.
