Anti-Fungal Home Remedy for Jock Itch

Ringworm is a common skin fungal infection. The fungus may grow in various locations in the body. Jock itch, also referred to as tinea cruris, is a ringworm infection in the groin area. Both males and females can suffer from jock itch. The symptoms of jock itch include large areas of skin with a red, scaly rash and extreme itching, according to the Merck Manual of Medical Information. The fungus thrives in warm, moist environments. Treatment includes the topical use of antifungal medications on the rash.

Step 1

Purchase an over-the-counter antifungal medication specific for jock itch. Several different companies make antifungal products with varying active ingredients such as tolnaftate. Products containing allylamines require shorter treatment times to cure the infection while products containing azoles may need longer time to help completely clear up the infection, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Step 2

Decide which type of preparation will work best. Antifungal medications come in several forms including spray, ointment, cream, lotion and powder form. Ointments may cause less irritation than creams, but tend to be messier and work best on open wounds or broken skin in the rash. Powders help absorb additional moisture in the affected area.

Step 3

Follow the instructions on the packaging carefully. Do not use the product if there is a known allergy to any of the ingredients.

Step 4

Wash the affected areas with a mild soap, such as baby shampoo and water. Pat the area dry.

Step 5

Apply the antifungal medication to the jock itch rash. Be sure to cover the entire affected area.

Step 6

Repeat the application twice daily until the rash is completely gone. Continuing to use the antifungal medication for several days after the rash has healed will helps decrease the chance of a recurrence. It usually takes several weeks of antifungal treatment for the rash to disappear.

Step 7

Wear loose cotton clothing and undergarments while treating the groin for jock itch to help reduce the moisture in the area and decrease friction on the rash.

Step 8

Store the antifungal medication away from young children.

Step 9

See a physician if the jock itch worsens or does not clear up with antifungal treatment. The rash may require additional medications.
