Aqua therapy is a low-impact exercise and rehabilitation program. The exercises used in aquatic therapy can be performed in an indoor or outdoor pool, or a body of water. Northwestern Health Sciences University notes that aqua therapy is performed in warm water, which enhances muscle relaxation. Aqua therapy minimizes joint compression, strengthens muscles and maintains cardiovascular fitness. This type of therapy is also used with individuals with disabilities.

Water Pilates

Similar to land-based pilates, this therapeutic option can increase your strength, make you more flexible and improve your range of motion. When performed in the water, pilates adds the resistance of water while incorporating breath control, proper body and spine alignment, and core strengthening.

Hydrostatic Pressure

Hydrostatic pressure is defined as pressure from fluid exerted equally on all surfaces of a body under water at a specific depth. Hydrostatic pressure helps to reduce blood pressure in patients suffering from hypertension. Those with swelling in the legs can find relief from hydrostatic therapy. The water surrounding the body helps to circulate blood from the lower extremities back to the heart. Hydrostatic pressure also does provide moderate resistance around the body's ribcage. According to physical therapists Cynthia Henley and Kathryn Wollam, the being immersed in water has a therapeutic effect on the body.

Ai Chi Ne

A water stretching program that involves the use of partners, ai chi ne is a form of aqua therapy that can be relaxing. Known to be helpful in reducing stress, joint and muscular tension, this style is a derivative of ai chi, which incorporates breath and movement synchronized concepts of tai chi, shiatsu and qigong.

Watsu

Watsu is a method of therapy that alleviates pain, increases circulation, reduces stress and has positive psychological effects. The therapist holds the client and moves the individual in the water. The water is used to massage the body. This method is often used for rehabilitation, those with orthopedic challenges, disabilities, the elderly and even during pregnancy.
