Dry eye syndrome affects 40 percent of Americans, according to drug manufacturer Allergan. Whether it is caused by allergies, environmental dryness or a serious medical condition like conjunctivitis or Sjogren's Syndrome, eye dryness is the result of reduced tear gland activity. When the body sleeps, its functions slow and rest. If the eye's tear drops do not properly lubricate it during the day, the eye will not gain relief at night and become more dry and irritated. Remedies for the condition range from prescription drops to an invasive to open tear ducts.
Humidifier
Nighttime eye dryness could be the result of low humidity levels in the home. Raising the humidity level in the air can allay the symptoms of dry eye at night. Sleeping with a cool mist humidifier in the bedroom adds humidity to the air, potentially preventing dryness overnight.
Heat Treatment
The Dry Eye Zone suggests heat packs on the eyes before bed. The heat stimulates the melbomian glands, releasing oils which lubricate the eye. These oils mix with the tears, preventing the eyes from drying out quickly.
Over-the-Counter Eyedrops
Eye drops fall into two categories, according to the Foundation for The American Academy of Ophthalmology. Wetting drops introduce moisture to the eye, soothing and lubricating the eye. These are most popularly known as artificial tears, which can offset the impact of environmental dryness. Decongestant drops contain a medicated solution that adds moisture to the eye and clears redness, also known as bloodshot eyes. Applying decongestant drops at night can reduce redness in the morning.
Intracanalicular Plugs
Some people with malformed or clogged tear ducts will resort to the installation of intracanalicular plugs, which open the duct holes and allow tears to flow freely. This is typically reserved for the most serious cases, although a 2005 article by the American Academy of Ophthalmology reveals that plug use may cause more trouble than good. The plugs can create a situation where too much tearing occurs or the plugs become lodged deep into the gland.
Cyclosporine
Marketed by Allergan under the brand name Restasis, cyclosporine stimulates the tear production in the eye. One drop in each eye twice daily reduces inflammation in the tear ducts, permitting the release of tears to lubricate the eye.
