Different essential oils have varying properties and can be used for many purposes. In her book, "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," Valerie Ann Worwood states that there are approximately 300 essential oils in use today but that the average household could fulfill its needs with about 10 oils. Many oils share similar properties. For example, lavender and orange blossom are both used for stress relief and relaxation, peppermint and nutmeg have energizing properties, and lemon and eucalyptus are commonly used for their antiseptic properties.
Relaxation and Stress Relief
Some essential oils are well-known for their ability to promote stress relief, relaxation, and even induce sleep. The Wellness Directory of Minnesota list of essential oils includes some commonly used oils used for the relief of stress or to calm the nervous system, including lavender, ylang ylang, orange blossom, angelica, and frankincense. Clary sage and Roman chamomile oils have been reported by the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy to be useful in the treatment of insomnia.
Energy Stimulating
Essential oils have the ability to lift the mood through simply inhaling the aroma. The Wellness Directory of Minnesota states that certain oils such as nutmeg are reported to have a beneficial effect on the circulatory system and may stimulate the adrenal glands for increased energy. Other oils, such as black pepper and grapefruit, have invigorating aromas which can provide a more energized mood when their aromas are inhaled.
Antiseptic
Many essential oils have antiseptic properties, which means that they may be useful for disinfection and for treating bacterial infections. The Wellness Directory of Minnesota lists petitgrain, patchouli, myrrh, melaleuca, marjoram, lemon, tea tree, cinnamon bark, clove, eucalyptus and Douglas fir as some of the essential oils that have anti-bacterial, antiseptic properties.
Easing Sore Muscles
Many essential oils can be mixed with a carrier oil such as grapeseed, almond, or olive oils, and applied directly to the skin on sore areas of the body. The Wellness Directory of Minnesota lists some essential oils known for their ability to soothe sore muscles and sprains, including lavender, Douglas fir, elemi and wintergreen.
