The Master Cleanse, also known as the Master Cleanser or the lemonade diet, is a detoxification program that involves drinking a mixture of lemon juice, water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. The Master Cleanse was created by Stanley Burroughs, who was not a doctor. According to Jocelyn Voo in "Fitness" magazine, Burroughs was charged with practicing medicine without a license and involuntary manslaughter when one of his patients died while following the Master Cleanse.

Lemon Juice

The Master Cleanse diet calls for 2 tbsp. of lemon juice per glass of lemonade. The lemon juice, ideally, is fresh-squeezed and from organic lemons, says Burroughs in his book, "The Master Cleanser". The lemon juice in the diet can be substituted for lime juice, if necessary. The Master Cleanse lemonade should be consumed immediately after being mixed, because as the mixture sits, enzymes in the lemonade will die. These enzymes, says Burroughs, are important because they break down toxins and waste in the colon and throughout the body.

Maple Syrup

After adding lemon juice, add 2 tbsp. of maple syrup and mix thoroughly. Burroughs recommends using grade B, organic maple syrup for best results. Pure, 100 percent maple syrup, as opposed to table syrup, is used because it contains more nutrients. Maple syrup is used to add a small amount of calories, sugar and nutrients for energy. Because the lemonade mixture is the only thing the dieter will be drinking for several days or even weeks, the maple syrup will provide a very minimal amount of calories to keep the body energized.

Cayenne Pepper

Add 1/10 tsp. of powdered cayenne pepper to the lemon juice and maple syrup mixture. Cayenne pepper helps dissolve the buildup of toxins in the colon, says Burroughs. He does not specify a particular type or brand of cayenne pepper to use in the lemonade mixture.

Water

Add 8 ounces of water to the mixture and mix well. After adding water, the lemonade mixture may be chilled, if desired, and then consumed as soon as possible. Burroughs suggests using distilled, filtered or spring water for the lemonade mixture. Additionally, Burroughs suggests drinking plain water throughout the day in order to stay hydrated and remove additional toxins throughout the duration of the Master Cleanse.
