Healthy Ways to Detox Your Body

You can't avoid toxins altogether. Pollution, pesticides and chemical residues exist in our water, air and foods. We also absorb toxins from things we touch, such as plastic food containers, lotions and home cleaners. If you're feeling sluggish and sick, or if you just feel like you need to detox, there are a wide variety of ways to go about it. While some require potentially dangerous fasts and detoxifying herbs and supplements, others require healthy lifestyle changes that may offer you added benefits beyond detoxification. Rather than occasionally performing large detoxes, it may be more beneficial to adopt a series of healthy habits that will keep your body detoxing itself on a daily basis.

Food

A good way to help your body detox is to reduce the amount of toxins you take in. Organic foods don't contain pesticides or chemical soil amendments, and they're not treated with coatings or preservatives. These are all chemicals that must pass through your liver and kidneys and increase your toxic load. It's also helpful to wash fruits and vegetables, even if they're organic, to rinse away potential toxins.

Water

Water is nature's detoxification aid. It works in conjunction with your excretory system to remove toxins from your body around the clock. When you're dehydrated, this system doesn't clean as effectively as it should. Still, many of the types of water we drink are additional sources of toxins. Planet Green recommends yoga for its ability to stimulate the organs that detoxify your body. Aside from flushing out toxins, yoga also helps flush out stale energy and clears your mind.

Home and Beauty

Take stock of the items you're using in your home and your beauty routine. Air fresheners, according to Health.com, contain chemicals you breathe into your lungs. Switch to one or two natural cleaning products and cleaners like vinegar and baking soda. Lotions, make-up, soaps and shampoos all deposit chemicals onto your skin that are absorbed into your blood stream. Limit your use of these items to assist your body flush away chemicals.
