Punching hard objects, such as an opponent's jaw, can easily damage the delicate bones in the hand. To prevent injury, boxers wrap their wrists and hands to provide additional support underneath boxing gloves. Worn alone, boxing wraps protect the hands during speed bag and heavy bag training.
Step 1
Unroll the wrap and place the loop over the thumb. Pull the wrap over the back of the hand and snugly loop it around the wrist three times.
Step 2
Loop the wrap around the base of the thumb once after the third wrap.
Step 3
Wrap over the back of the hand, just above the wrist, and then around the thumb. Repeat this three times. Clench your fist from time to time to test the tightness of the wrap. If the wrap is too loose, unwrap and tighten accordingly.
Step 4
Wrap the knuckles, coming up from under the wrist for the first wrap. Keep the fingers spread, then bring the wrap across the palm and around the knuckles. Wrap the knuckles three times.
Step 5
Bring the wrap back and make one loop around the wrist.
Step 6
Bring the wrap over the back of the hand and run it between the middle and ring fingers, across the palm to the back of the thumb, and then bring it over the back of the hand once again, circling the knuckles two or three more times.
Step 7
Bring the wrap across the back of the hand to the wrist and secure it with the attachment on the wrap or with athletic tape.
Tips and Warnings
- Wraps should be tight enough to stay in place, but not tight enough to restrict circulation. Getting the right tension will take practice. Hand wraps get sweaty and need to be washed. Most can be thrown in a washing machine, but they'll get tangled up unless you put them in a mesh laundry bag.
- Wrapping hands does not counteract poor technique. Learn to make a proper fist and how to punch from a qualified boxing coach.
