The sinuses are a sensitive cavity, located directly in the middle of the head. When the sinus cavity is irritated by allergens, sickness or an infection, it responds with inflammation and swelling, according to the Mayo Clinic. This leads to nasal congestion, sinus pain pressure and sinus headaches. While many over-the-counter (OTC) medications exist to treat sinus-related symptoms, all-natural remedies may be just as effective without the side effects of taking medication.
Saline Spray
Saline spray is commonly used to treat inflamed sinuses. It may be purchased at your local pharmacy for a few dollars. Saline spray is safe and effective for use on anyone, at any age, including newborns and children, according Little Remedies, a leading manufacturer of all-natural children's products. For babies and children, place two to three drops in each nostril as often as needed. Adults should spray two to three squirts in each nostril, and then gently blow the nose. Saline spray helps to moisten the nasal passages and loosen any thick mucus.
Neti Pot
A neti pot was designed to cleanse the sinuses using a saline solution, commonly known as a saline wash. Purchase a neti pot at a local pharmacy for less than 20 dollars. Place the saline contents in the neti pot, mix it with warm water and stir until the solution is completely dissolved. Place your head over a sink, while tilting to one direction. Put the neti pot in one of the nostrils and allow gravity to pull the saline wash throughout the sinus cavity, coming out the other nostril. After all the solution has successfully filtered through, gently blow your nose and repeat on the other nostril. Use caution when using a neti pot. If you experience burning or pain, discontinue use and seek medical advice.
Humidity
Humidity plays an important part in sinus health. Dry air may cause the sinuses to become irritated, leading to inflammation, while too much humidity can cause a stuffy nose, according to Kidshealth.org. If the air is dry, use a humidifier as you sleep, maintaining a humidity level of 45 to 50 percent. If the air is too humid, run your heat or air-conditioning to remove excessive moister from the air. Taking a hot shower may help relieve sinus issues as well, due to the heat and moisture it creates.
