Rose hips, also known as rose haws, are a small fruit found on the rose plant. For centuries, they have been revered for their healing properties. Rose hips can be taken in a variety of ways, ranging from pill supplements to teas, jams, pies and other edible forms. The benefits of rose hips, which range from vitamins to antiviral properties, are many.

Vitamin C

The biggest benefit of rose hips is their extremely high vitamin C level. A 1943 study published in the scientific journal Nature found that each rose hip contains between 6,000 and 10,000 I.U. of vitamin A per 100 grams. The high vitamin C content was known for centuries, and during World War II the governments of Britain and the United States urged their citizens to grow rose hips in their victory gardens as a way of getting this essential vitamin.

Other Vitamins

Rose hips also contain vitamins D and E. Both vitamins have been shown to reduce inflammation and promote better immune system response. Low vitamin D levels have been shown in studies to be associated with higher risks of heart disease, asthma and depression.

Arthritis

Because of the combination of three vitamins that reduce inflammation, rose hips are frequently recommended for those who have arthritis. Rose hips are especially beneficial for people who have trouble taking pills because they can be made into teas, jams, pies and other edible forms.

Cold and Flu

Another benefit of the anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting vitamins is that rose hips are helpful when fighting off the cold and flu viruses. Rose hips are also a safe alternative for those who cannot take traditional cold and flu medicines because of high blood pressure. The Missouri Department of Health And Senior Services states that rose hips can be used as an alternative to medicines in mothers who are breastfeeding to lessen the impact on the child.
