A facelift is a common cosmetic surgical procedure to help erase wrinkles and remove sagging of the skin, but there will be scars, which are normally hidden within the folds of the skin and by the hairline. Healing takes time, with scars starting to fade after six months. There are some things that can be done in the meantime to heal scars a little faster and to lessen their prominence.

Step 1

Apply aloe vera gel to the scars. Aloe acts as a natural bleaching agent that fades scars while reducing their size. Aloe vera appears to absorb ultraviolet light, which accounts for its mild skin lightening abilities. Dab on a small amount, the size of a dime, to your facelift scars once or twice daily. You can also add vitamin E powder or oil to the aloe gel to boost healing potential.

Step 2

Choose laser resurfacing. This procedure flattens and eliminates the scarring from a facelift. Laser resurfacing utilizes a low intensity laser to slowly remove the outer damaged layers of skin to expose newer skin underneath. This option may take several treatments before desired results are accomplished. According to the American Academy of Facial and Plastic Surgery, the scars will remain, but they will not be noticeable.

Step 3

Poke a pinhole in a vitamin E capsule and squeeze the oil onto your fingers. Gently massage the vitamin E oil into the scarred skin and swallow the rest of the capsule for added good measure. Vitamin E promotes proper skin healing by aiding in collagen fiber formation and skin cell regeneration during the healing process.

Step 4

Have a dermabrasion treatment at your dermatologist's office. Dermabrasion is an exfoliation treatment that sloughs off the damaged layer of skin. This flattens the scar tissue and helps remove redness, making the scarring less noticeable.

Step 5

Soak a cotton ball in tea tree oil or green tea. Dab the solution onto the scars. Tea tree oil and green tea act as antimicrobials as well as having antiseptic qualities. The tea will remove bacteria from the scars and provide a proper healing environment, stimulating skin cell regeneration.

Things You'll Need

  • Aloe vera gel
  • Vitamin E capsule
  • Cotton balls
  • Tea tree oil or green tea
