The Georgetown University Department of Medicine defines face pores as the openings for hair follicles. Within these tiny holes, your skin manufactures oils, but an overproduction of facial oils (sebum) can block your pores, forming whiteheads or blackheads. The threat of blockage increases when debris, dirt and bacteria accumulate on the surface of your skin. You can take control of the situation by cleaning your face in the morning and the evening, before you go to bed, using products you already have in your home.
Step 1
Cleanse your face pores with a homemade blend of milk and honey. Honey has antibacterial properties that can draw impurities from your pores, while the milk soothes and calms your skin. Blend 1 tsp. of warm honey with 1 tsp. of milk to form a thick cream. Massage your skin and pores with the milk and honey cleanser for approximately 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
Step 2
Mix 4 tbsp. of almond meal with enough water to form a thick paste. Massage the mixture on your face for deep-pore cleansing. The almond meal scrub will exfoliate dead skin cells. Allow the scrub to remain on your skin for approximately 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
Step 3
Mix 1 tbsp. of clear, unflavored gelatin with 1 tbsp. of milk in a small microwavable bowl. Warm the mixture in the microwave for approximately 10 seconds, then apply it to your skin using a clean artist's brush or makeup brush. Allow the homemade pore strip to dry for approximately 10 minutes before peeling it away.
Step 4
Steam away dirt from your face pores and soften your skin at the same time. Cleanse your face and tie your hair back in a band. Bring a pot of water to a boil on your stove top. Remove the pot from the stove once it boils and set it on a trivet. Place a bath towel over your head and lean your head over the steam for at least five minutes. Remove the towel and step away from the steam. Cool your face with a cool water rinse to close your pores. Saturate a cotton ball with witch hazel and massage the cotton ball over your face to tone.
Tips and Warnings
- Heat the honey in a microwave just long enough to thin it out a little and warm it up. The honey should not be hot. No more than 30 seconds of microwave heat should be required. Add 4 tbsp. of honey, 2 tbsp. of jojoba and five drops of peppermint oil to the almond meal scrub to step up the cleansing power, creating a tingly sensation. Add two or three herbal tea bags to the boiling water. Chamomile tea works well for all skin types. Add peppermint tea bags for oily skin or rose tea for its anti-inflammatory properties.
- Rinse the brush immediately after applying the pore stripper. Failing to rinse the brush will render it unusable for later applications.
