For women who want to get rid of unwanted hair, there are a variety of options, ranging from low-cost, temporary solutions to more expensive, permanent procedures. Each type of hair removal offers its own benefits and possible side effects, which can vary depending on your individual skin and hair type and the area you want clear of hair.

Features

There are a variety of hair removal techniques available to women, with waxing and shaving being popular temporary options. Shaving and waxing can be done at home, and waxing is also offered at many salons. Laser hair removal and electrolysis offer popular permanent hair removal solutions and are performed at dermatologists or cosmetic services facilities. According to the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, laser hair removal is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal uses laser heat to penetrate melanin in the hair, which in turn arrests hair growth in the follicle. The laser beam can affect melanin in the skin as well, and there are different types of lasers available for varying skin tones, according to the "Hair Removal Journal." Laser hair removal requires repeat treatments, usually from three to seven, depending on the individual hair type and size of the treatment area.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis uses a small needle to destroy the ability to grow hair in the follicles, while removing the existing hair. Electrolysis offers a permanent solution to unwanted hair. The procedure can be costly, as it can take anywhere from several treatments over the course of a few months to many treatments over the course of years to completely penetrate all of the hair follicles. Prices can range from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars.

Considerations

When choosing a hair removal method, consider your skin type, price range, hair type, area with unwanted hair and how much you are willing to spend. Women with dark skin should take into consideration that laser hair removal is more likely to cause skin discoloration in skin that is darker, with more melanin. If you are on a budget, less-permanent hair removal by waxing may be your best bet.

Effects

Each hair removal technique can produce different effects. Shaving may cause skin irritability, which can be lessened by using a shaving cream for sensitive skin, available at most chain and drug stores. Waxing can cause redness for a few hours afterwards, according to Derm Net. Waxing can also irritate sensitive skin and cause pain for some people. Laser hair removal may cause discomfort, and can hurt the most during your first treatment. Electrolysis may cause minor pain, but a topical anesthetic often helps.
