If your child is exposed to a type of bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, she may be at risk of developing tuberculosis or TB. World Health Organization estimates indicated that over 100,000 children die from tuberculosis each year, reports the American Lung Association. If you have questions about the symptoms of tuberculosis in children, talk with your pediatrician.

Asymptomatic

Almost half of all children who have tuberculosis do not experience symptoms (asymptomatic), explains the Health Protection Agency, a division of the Centre for Infections in London, England. In such instances, you may not even be aware that you child has this infection. If you have concerns that your child has tuberculosis--even if she does not display symptoms--talk with your doctor about having your child tested for this infection.

Fever

If the tuberculosis infection spreads throughout the lungs into other organs in your child's body, he may develop a persistent low-grade fever, explain health educators at Kids Health, an informational website focused on child health issues that is supported by the Nemours Foundation. A fever develops as a natural response of your child's immune system and helps prevent the bacteria from growing and replicating. Symptoms of fever due to tuberculosis can cause your child to complain that he feels hot (sweating) or that his head hurts (headache). These fever symptoms can last for several months if your child has tuberculosis. Report symptoms of fever to your pediatrician as such effects can be indicative of an alternate medical problem.

Cough

Tuberculosis typically develops first within the lungs, which can cause your child to experience respiratory problems. Prolonged periods of coughing may be accompanied by increased levels of mucus or phlegm within your child's lungs, explains Kids Health. Certain children may also cough up mucus that contains small amounts of blood.

Flu-like Symptoms

A child with tuberculosis can exhibit a number of flu-like symptoms due to this infection. These symptoms can include weakness, decreased appetite, weight loss, night sweats, body aches or extreme fatigue, explain medical professionals at Children's Hospital Boston in Massachusetts. Flu-like symptoms due to tuberculosis are typically mild but can persist and may worsen if your child does not receive appropriate treatment. Talk with your pediatrician if your child develops any of these symptoms to ensure that your child receives an accurate diagnosis.
