Homeopathy is a medical treatment that relies upon tiny doses of natural medicines and herbs. Homeopathic remedies are not the same as herbal medicines. In homeopathy, any plant, mineral or animal substance can be used as a remedy, but the original substance is heavily diluted. The National Center for Homeopathy says that because the remedies are very diluted, they also are very safe. The list of possible remedies is long, but Homeopathic Education Services cites some of those used most commonly.

Allium Cepa (Onion)

Anyone who has ever cried while chopping an onion knows onions can cause teary eyes and dripping noses. Homeopathy treats with remedies that produce similar effects to the problem, so allium cepa is often used to treat colds and hay fever.

Arnica (Daisy)

Homeopathic Educational Services says arnica is the No. 1 sports medicine and first aid remedy. It is often used to treat shock and trauma, help reduce pain from injury and speed healing.

Chamomilla (Chamomile)

Chamomilla is a popular remedy among new parents because it is used to treat irritable infants. The remedy may be prescribed when babies become irritable and cry incessantly due to teething or colic.

Hypericum (St. John's Wort)

St. John's wort is well-known as an herbal medicine that is sometimes used for the treatment of depression. In homeopathy, it is used to treat injuries to the nerves or to parts of the body rich with nerves, such as the fingers, toes and back. It is often recommended for those experiencing any kind of shooting pain.

Ignatia (St. Ignatius Bean)

Ignatia is used in homeopathic medicine to treat emotional conditions such as acute grief, anxiety and depression. A homeopath may recommend Ignatia when someone is suffering from the death or loss of a loved one.

Magnesia Phosphorica (Phosphate of Magnesia)

Women suffering from menstrual cramps may be prescribed a dose of magnesia phosphorica. It is often recommended when the cramps are so severe it causes a woman to bend over and when warm applications are shown to provide some relief from cramps.

Nux Vomica (Poison Nut)

If you have a tendency to overindulge, you may want to keep some nux vomica on hand. The remedy is prescribed for ailments brought on by taking too many drugs or doing too much drinking and eating. Homeopathic Educational Services describes it as an "all too frequent" medicine today.
