Many people experience dry scalp as a result of various factors such as extreme weather conditions, drying hair products, product buildup, medical conditions (e.g., eczema or psoriasis) or dehydration. For most, dry scalp causes dandruff. If you have a severe form of dry scalp, you can consult a dermatologist; however, most cases can be treated at home.
Hair Care Regimen
Having a consistent hair care regimen is not only essential for proper hair care but it also can help to prevent or treat a dry scalp. According to the Mayo Clinic, avoiding scalp buildup and overstyling hair can prevent dry scalp and dandruff. When products build up on the scalp, they clog the pores, preventing moisture from conditioning the scalp; the result is dry scalp.
Additionally, if you consistently use hair products that contain concentrations of alcohol or other chemicals, these products remove the moisture from your hair, creating a dry scalp. For these reasons, shampooing and conditioning your hair regularly are essential. Try using a shampoo and conditioner that are designed to provide additional moisture to the hair. If you are experiencing dandruff, opt for a medicated or dandruff shampoo. Be careful not to wash your hair too often because it can rob your scalp of natural moisture.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil, derived from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree in Australia, has been used to treat dry scalp, states the Mayo Clinic. Tea tree is known for its antiseptic, antibiotic and antifungal properties. Some shampoos contain tea tree oil or you can add a few drops to your shampoo as a treatment for dry scalp or dandruff. Tea tree oil can cause an allergic reaction, so you should consult your doctor, dermatologist or even hairstylist before using it extensively.
Sulfur
Sulfur is a naturally present mineral found near the opening of hot springs and volcanoes. Sulfur generally has a "rotten egg" odor but has been found to be helpful in treating skin disorders that cause dry scalp or dandruff, indicates the University of Maryland Medical Center. Sulfur comes in two forms, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). Sulfur as a treatment for dry scalp is applied directly to the scalp and followed up by shampooing the hair.
