Uva Ursi Uses

For at least 2,000 years, uva ursi has been valued for its role in the treatment of common diseases and conditions. This versatile medicinal fruit was the preferred treatment for urinary tract infections until the advent of antibiotics, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Today, uva ursi remains a popular component of modern integrative medicine. Because uva ursi can cause serious side effects, it should be used only under the guidance of a qualified health care provider.

Urinary Tract Infections

Uva ursi is most commonly used as a treatment for bacterial infections of the urinary tract. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that uva ursi contains antibacterial compounds like arbutin and hydroquinone, as well as compounds that decrease irritation and inflammation.

Cystitis

Uva ursi can decrease cystitis, or inflammation of the bladder. This may occur independently or as a result of a urinary tract infection. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that uva ursi can shrink and tighten the mucus membranes responsible for bladder discomfort.

Arthritis

The health information website Drugs reports that uva ursi may be used alongside prednisolone and dexamethasone, two popular corticosteroids, as a treatment for arthritis. There is little evidence to support the safety or efficacy of this treatment.

Contact Dermatitis

The Drugs website notes uva ursi's potential use as a treatment for contact dermatitis, an itchy condition that occurs after skin contacts an irritant. Uva ursi may be applied topically to the skin.
