1. Take Baby Steps
The Macrobiotic Diet is a way of life, which closely resembles a vegan diet. If you are used to eating the way most people do, transitioning to eating a different way may be difficult. Taking smaller steps toward the goals of macrobiotics may mean more success in the end, rather than changing everything at once. The macrobiotic diet is full of whole grains and fibers, so a sudden change to a high fiber diet may upset your intestinal tract.
2. Clean Out Your Cupboards
Go through your cupboards and pantry and get rid of processed or imported foods that the macrobiotic diet discourages. You will most likely find plenty of food that falls into this category while looking through your stock of food. Many diets are sustained by these products and are the staples of many pantries and refrigerators. Cleaning these out of your house and changing your lifestyle benefits your health. Processed snacks, convenient boxed diners, canned pastas and other like foods must be given up. Most animal products and dairy must be excluded from your life and cupboards, as well.
3. Learn to Cook
Take a cooking class. Many macrobiotic diet classes are becoming available, so check your local community college or adult education center. Learning how to cook and what to cook while on this diet helps you transition into the macrobiotic diet. There are also shows on television that help you learn to cook a new way. Check your local public television station and food channel show guides for shows that pertain to macrobiotic cooking.
4. Buy Locally
Shopping for food may be challenging while learning the macrobiotic lifestyle. You must find a source of locally grown and organic foods. While some communities may have locally grown foods available at farmer's markets, it may be challenging to find stores in some areas. If farmer's markets aren't available in your area, look for a local health food store that carries organic and locally grown foods. Most people on macrobiotic diets try to find foods grown and produced within a 300 mile radius.
