Volleyball is a simple game taught at youth levels and played all the way through professional and Olympic levels. It is a popular noncontact sport that is governed by fairly simple, easy-to-learn rules. The ease of learning the game is part of what contributes to its popularity. While the complete rules are somewhat more complex, you can teach and play a basic game of volleyball by learning three simple rules.

Position Rules

Volleyball can be played with anywhere from two to six players, but both teams must have even numbers of players for the entire game. Additionally, one player must be labeled as the server--you can rotate players through the server position throughout the game, but each time a serve is put into play, it must be done so by the server. The server must also enter the ball into play from beyond the boundaries of the volleyball court. After the serve is delivered, the server may enter into the volleyball bounds and continue playing like any other player.

Scoring Rule

A point is scored for a volleyball team whenever the ball lands on the ground, regardless of whether it is in-bounds or out-of-bounds. When the ball lands in-bounds, the point is awarded to the team on the opposite side of the net from the side where the ball lands. When the ball lands out of bounds, it is credited to the last team who touches the ball, regardless of what side of the net it lands on. The point is awarded to the team who was not the most recent team to touch the ball.

Volley Rule

The volleyball can only be bounced on one side of the net three times before it has to be volleyed to the opposing team over the net. If one team hits the volleyball four consecutive times, it is a violation and is scored as a point for the other team.
