If your toenails are yellow, brittle and break easily, you may have toenail fungus. Toenail fungus grows in damp, moist environments created by synthetic socks, public showers or swimming pools. If you catch nail fungus early, you may be able to reduce it with natural home remedies. If the fungus progresses, however, you might need to see a doctor for a professional treatment, such as a prescription antifungal medication or nail lacquer.
Cut Your Nails
Cutting your nails short may prevent the fungus from spreading to the entire nail. Clip nails right up to the nail bed to prevent fungus from growing, recommends Dr. Lowell Goldsmith, professor and chairman of the department of dermatology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. If the fungus has progressed past the tip of the nail, cutting it may not keep the fungus from spreading. Wash your hands after touching your feet to prevent the spread of fungus.
Vinegar
Soaking the foot in vinegar may stop the growth of fungus, says the Mayo Clinic. Prepare a mixture of one part vinegar and two parts warm water, then soak the afflicted foot in it for 15 to 20 minutes, recommends the Mayo Clinic. Soak the foot at often as once a day. If the mixture is too strong and causes skin dryness, add more warm water or soak the area three times a week. Wash your hands after touching your feet and discard the vinegar mixture after use.
Alpha Hydroxy Acid Cream
The same over-the-counter alpha hydoxy acid cream that can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles on the skin may also reduce toenail fungus, says dermatologist Alan J. Liftin. Before going to bed, apply a thin layer of alpha hydroxy acid cream to the toes, toenails and just underneath the nails. Alpha hydroxy acids encourage skin exfoliation, which may remove dead skin cells that fungus has attached to. Wash your hands with soap and water after touching your feet to keep the fungus from spreading.
