When you are trying to slim down, you need to follow a healthy diet and exercise. Combining these two lifestyle changes can create a caloric deficit, which is what you need for weight loss. To lose 1 pound of weight, your deficit must be 3,500 calories. By knowing how many calories are burned with various activities, you can keep track of your daily expenditures when you want to reach a certain goal. But be advised that caloric expenditures vary depending on your weight and the type of exercise.

Walking

Walking is a non-impact form of cardiovascular exercise. A 180-pound person can burn about 315 calories with 45 minutes of walking at 4 mph. This comes out to 7 calories of expenditure per minute.

Running

Running is more intense than walking and it causes more impact on your joints. It is also more labor intensive. A 200-pound person can burn more than 950 calories with one hour of running at 6 mph.

Biking

Biking is a type of low-impact cardio that can be done on an upright bike or recumbent bike. The recumbent style has a backrest and is operated in a horizontal position. In 60 minutes, a 180-pound person can burn just more than 600 calories while biking at a moderate intensity.

Swimming

Swimming involves movement of the upper and lower body simultaneously and the water acts as good resistance when exercising. In 30 minutes, a 180-pound person can burn nearly 260 calories.

Rowing

Rowing is a more intense form of full-body cardio. Not only do you get the calorie-burning benefit, but you also work numerous muscles, such as the back, shoulders, legs and arms. A 200-pound person can burn more than 800 calories with 60 minutes of vigorous rowing.

Weight Training

Weightlifting is a type of anaerobic activity that is not known for burning a high amount of calories. Nonetheless, it does burn some and every bit helps when you're trying to lose weight. It also helps build muscle, which can raise your resting metabolic rate. Lifting weights for one hour at a moderate intensity can burn about 280 calories for someone who weighs 210 pounds.

Jumping Rope

Jumping rope is a form of cardio that can be done at any location as long as you have a high enough ceiling. This form of exercise not only burns calories, but it also helps tone your legs, arms, shoulders and upper back. A 200-pound person can expect to burn almost 500 calories with 30 minutes of jumping rope.

Shoveling Snow

Shoveling snow is an activity done by people who live in the kind of climate that calls for it. A 180-pound person can burn just more than 500 calories with one hour of shoveling snow.
