A Healthy & Balanced Diet

Building a balanced diet of nutritious foods is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your health. The best foods for your body will help it function at its most effective level, and will help you look and feel your best. These foods are full of natural vitamins and minerals, and include fresh, whole and unprocessed (or minimally processed) foods.

Significance

Eating a diet that's full of fresh and nutritious foods offers many significant health benefits. According to the American Heart Association, a healthy diet helps lower blood pressure and also contributes to reducing the risk of heart attack, heart disease, stroke and other serious health issues. Eating a variety of healthy foods also helps keep your blood sugar level steady and may boost the amount of energy you have.

Health Foods

Health foods can be defined as foods that offer the best nutritional profiles for the body. They contain the greatest variety of vitamins and minerals that are essential to the body's natural functions, and they have few if any ill effects on health. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the healthiest foods for boosting the body's immune system are those that are highest in nutrients and micronutrients, especially antioxidants, which are most often found in deeply colored fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables.
Many processed and pre-packaged foods offer a great number of nutrients as well. However, preparing and preserving processed foods often necessitates adding preservatives, sodium or artificial ingredients that can be harmful for the body. In general, health foods are as low as possible in calories, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium.

Balance

Eating a variety of foods is best for your body because no one food or food group offers all of the nutrients that you need for good health. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends following a varied diet that strikes a balance with daily servings of grains (at least half of them whole), fruits, vegetables, low-fat or nonfat dairy products, and lean proteins.

Cautions

Including healthy foods in your diet won't always offer significant benefits unless you also make an effort to balance the nutrients you consume and limit unhealthy foods. The Mayo Clinic recommends limiting the amount of saturated fat, trans fat, sugar, salt and cholesterol that you eat, drinking alcohol only in moderation and controlling the amount of calories that you eat daily.

Other Considerations

Fresh, healthy, whole foods are not always convenient to get or prepare, and they often cost more than their processed counterparts. It's not always economical to eat a healthy, balanced diet, but the long-term health benefits can heavily outweigh the downsides of higher cost and compromised convenience.
If you're attempting to lose weight, a healthy diet is a key factor that will help you in your plan. However, even if you reduce the number of calories you consume and choose a balanced variety of healthy foods, you may not be able to lose weight unless you burn off extra calories through regular exercise.
