Obese people may be able to obtain a short-term prescription from their physician for phendimetrazine, a diet pill sold in generic form and in brands including Bontril. Bontril is similar to an amphetamine and is approved for short-term use as a treatment for obesity in addition to a diet and exercise program. It is available as a short-lasting drug (Bontril PDM) or in slow-release form (Bontril SR). Bontril and similar medications appear to be only marginally effective, and long-term use can lead to addiction.

Appetite Reduction

Bontril stimulates the central nervous system, which decreases appetite. In short studies evaluating the effectiveness of phendimetrazine and similar drugs, as explained by eMedTV, people lost more weight than those not taking the drug, but only a fraction of a pound more per week. The effects of these medications for weight loss also decrease after a few weeks.

Stimulant Effects

Central nervous stimulation increases heart rate and blood pressure, a concern for people who have heart problems or high blood pressure, conditions associated with obesity. Increased blood pressure also can worsen glaucoma, as noted by eMedTV. The stimulation effects can cause insomnia if the patient takes Bontril late in the day. Other central nervous system stimulation effects may include restlessness, nervousness, anxiety, hyperactivity, tremors, shakiness, sweating, dizziness and headache. Bontril also can mask symptoms of extreme tiredness, leading to an increased risk of an accident while driving or operating other machinery.

Dependence

Using Bontril for more than a few weeks can lead to physical and psychological dependence, according to Drugs.com. Withdrawal effects such as extreme fatigue and depression may occur if the individual discontinues the medication suddenly.

Overdose Effects

Because the effects of Bontril decrease over time, a patient may decide to increase the dosage, which can lead to an overdose. Symptoms of a Bontril overdose as listed by Drugs.com may include restlessness, panic, tremors, confusion, hallucinations, aggressive behavior, nausea, diarrhea, rapid breathing, an irregular heartbeat and seizures.

Allergic Reaction

Although it is unlikely, some people may experience an allergic reaction to Bontril. Signs listed by Drugs.com include a rash or hives, difficulty breathing, throat closing, and facial or mouth swelling. An allergic reaction to Bontril should be considered a medical emergency.
