The dried leaves of green tea (Camellia sinensis) originates in ancient China and has a long recorded history of therapeutic use. Today, green tea is widely consumed throughout the world for a variety of health benefits. Green tea may be brewed and consumed as a tea or beverage and also taken in a capsule form. Research indicates that green tea extract is beneficial for a number of diseases including cancer, heart disease and inflammation.
Cancer Prevention
Laboratory studies conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) suggest that green tea may protect against or significantly reduce the spread of certain cancers. Green tea contains powerful antioxidant components or polyphenols known as EGCG that the NCCAM suggest can prevent breast, stomach and skin cancers. The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) notes that the naturally occurring polyphenols in tea can destroy cancerous cells in the body and inhibit their progression and spread. Cancer rates are significantly lower in countries where individuals regularly consume green tea, according to UMMC.
Heart Disease Prevention
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggest that there is evidence that regular consumption of green tea may reduce the risk of heart disease, specifically coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is the buildup of harmful fatty plaque that blocks the heart from proper oxygenated blood. Clinical studies suggest that green tea's powerful antioxidant abilities may help prevent the hardening of the arteries from plaque that result in death. Researchers from the UMMC report that green tea also lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels that normally increase the risk of coronary artery disease. One study showed that the rate of cardiovascular disease decreased by 11 percent when individuals regularly consumed 3 cups of green tea daily.
Reduce Inflammation
Inflammation in the body can cause pain and discomfort as well as lead to many disorders in the body. Studies by UMMC show that green tea can reduce inflammation in the body that is associated with inflammatory diseases such as Chron's and ulcerative colitis. Research shows that this decrease risk of inflammatory diseases also helps prevents cancer of the colon. The NIH also highlights green tea's ability to reduce inflammation and promote health. One researched study shows that green tea extract benefits individuals suffering from arthritis because it reduces inflammation by preventing the breakdown of cartilage tissue.
