Measuring pH balance through urine testing can help you determine whether your kidneys. adrenal glands, and lungs are functioning by properly filtering blood and maintaining proper acid and alkaline balance in the bloodstream. You can test your pH at home following a few simple steps and remembering that the ideal urinary pH is between 6.5 and 7.0, according to the Molecular Fitness Program for athletes and medical providers.

Step 1

Take all testing supplies into the bathroom with you and make sure that they are within easy reach as you perform your pH test. The ideal time to test pH is three to four hours after a meal. Keep in mind that pH levels tend to be lower in the morning and higher in the evenings.

Step 2

Sit on the toilet and allow a little urine to pass, then stop the stream. Open the lid of your sterile collection cup and continue urination into the container until you have filled it at least 1/4 of the way. This will ensure that you have an adequete amount of urine for testing.

Step 3

Remove a pH strip from its container and dip the strip into your urine container. You only need to hold it in the urine for approximately 10 seconds.

Step 4

Remove the strip from the urine and match the three colors on the strip to the color chart on the strip container. The color chart contains numbers, showing the numeric level of each color on your strip.

Step 5

Dispose of your urine in the toilet and wrap your pH strip and urine container in a plastic bag and dispose of in the garbage.

Tips and Warnings

  • You may pass the pH strip through your urine stream instead of collecting urine in a cup if desired.

Things You'll Need
