Chamomile is an herbal supplement that can be used to help treat a variety of problems and ailments. It may help common colds, menstrual cramping, inflammation of the gums and sore gums, and vaginitis. Chamomile is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration since it is an herbal supplement. The effectiveness and safety of it is unknown and may cause some side effects.
Lowered Blood Sugar
Chamomile has been known to lower blood sugar, according to Medline Plus; people with high blood sugar use it for this reason. This is a cause for concern for people who already have low blood sugar or are close to low blood sugar. When blood sugar is lowered it can cause irregular heart beats, clammy hands, hunger and irritability. In the worst case, it can lead to a coma.
Allergic Reaction
Chamomile can cause allergic reactions for some people. Allergic reactions can take the form of itching and swelling. Shortness of breath, anaphylaxis and throat swelling may occur, according to Medline Plus. Also, if the chamomile has been used in the eyes as a drop, pink eye can occur.
Drowsiness
Chamomile acts similar to an anti-anxiety medication. It relaxes the body and may cause drowsiness. Since chamomile may cause drowsiness, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery while on the supplement.
