Abilify (aripiprazole) is an anti-psychotic drug. According to Drugs.com, Abilify is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression), major depressive disorder, and symptoms of aggression and mood swings in autistic children who are at least 6 years old. There are some side effects of Abilify that users should be aware of.

Mood and Behavior

You may experience alterations in mood and behavior while taking Abilify. This may include thoughts and ideas about suicide. If you or a family member notices new signs of nervousness, agitation, panic attacks, sleeplessness, irritability, aggressiveness or other mood changes on a day-to-day basis, notify your doctor right away, reports PDR Health. Your prescribing physician should monitor you closely when you begin taking Abilify, until you know how this medication will affect you.

Headache and Dizziness

You may experience headache and dizziness while taking Abilify. These side effects may diminish over time as your body adjusts to the medication. Use extreme caution while driving or operating machinery until you know how Abilify will affect you. Ask your health care provider if you can take an over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen to help relieve headaches. If the headaches and dizziness become severe, contact your physician immediately.

Insomnia

Insomnia is a common Abilify side effect. You may find it difficult to fall or stay asleep at night. A soothing bath, warm milk or massage before bedtime are natural ways to help you fall asleep. If insomnia begins to interfere with your daily life, speak with your physician. She may consider altering your current medication regimen or prescribing a drug to help you sleep.

Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting may occur while taking Abilify. These side effects may lessen over time as your body adjusts to Abilify. Decreasing the amount of spicy or fatty foods in your diet, and eating smaller meals more frequently, may help alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort.
