Flips are cool tricks to master on the skateboard as well as good way to develop and challenge your own personal skill levels. A prerequisite to nearly all skateboard flips is that you can ollie, meaning that you can get your board airborne by popping it off the floor. If you can do this to a proficient standard, then you are ready to attempt a flip. The best flip to attempt first is probably the kick flip, which involves spinning the deck of the board vertically through 360 degrees.
Step 1
Set off on the board at a medium pace to develop the groundwork for a strong amount of pop. Place your back foot over the tail of the board and your front foot just below the front bolts on an approximately 40-degree angle. Have the heel of your front foot positioned off the edge of the board to make it easier to spin the deck.
Step 2
Bend your knees deeply and pop the board off the surface you are skating on. As the board pops, flick your toes outwards to set the board off spinning. Try to flick your foot towards your body without pushing down on the deck too much, as downwards force will just send the deck back down to the floor.
Step 3
Focus your attention back on attaining as much height as possible once the board is spinning. Lift your knees to encourage the board to travel higher and to allow the board to spin unhindered.
Step 4
Consider how you are going to land your kick flip. Watch the deck closely as it begins to reach the top of its spin; you want to time your foot placement to coincide with the deck levelling out in its original position. Slam your feet down onto the deck with as much force as possible as soon as it levels out.
Step 5
Carry the force of your landing through until you hit the ground. Bend your knees as you do so to absorb all of the shock of the landing and stabilize the skateboard. Skate off from the landing zone.
