Anxiety disorders refer to a range of psychiatric conditions, including phobias, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Venlafaxine
Venlafaxine, commonly sold as Effexor, belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). MedlinePlus notes that this medication treats generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder. Venlafaxine is also prescribed as an antidepressant. Some of venlafaxine's less serious side effects include nightmares, headache, sweating, yawning and trouble urinating. Some of its serious effects include fever, confusion, easy bleeding or bruising and a fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat. Notify a doctor if venlafaxine leads to these effects. Taking drugs such as clozapine, haloperidol, fluoxetine or rizatriptan may require a decrease in venlafaxine's dose. Venlafaxine is a tablet or capsule taken two to three times a day.
Escitalopram
Escitalopram, most commonly sold as Lexapro, is an antidepressant medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Escitalopram treats generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder. Drugs.com notes that escitalopram's less serious effects include nausea, gas, weight changes, trouble sleeping and drowsiness. Escitalopram's serious side effects include confusion, hallucinations, tremors, headache and irregular heartbeat. Phone a doctor if escitalopram leads to these effects. This medication may interact with such medications as naproxen, etodolac or piroxicam. Escitalopram is a liquid or tablet taken daily.
Diazepam
Diazepam, commonly sold as Valium, is a benzodiazepine medication that treats anxiety disorders. Drugs.com notes that diazepam's less concerning side effects include blurry vision, trouble sleeping, constipation, nausea and nightmares. Diazepam's serious side effects include suicidal thoughts or actions, confusion, yellowing of the skin or eyes and decreased urination. Call a physician if diazepam leads to these effects. Those suffering from asthma, glaucoma, kidney or liver disease or a seizure disorder may require a decrease in diazepam's dose. Diazepam is a tablet taken daily or as a doctor prescribes.
