Butenafine is a topical prescription medication indicated for the treatment of fungal infections associated with ringworm. This medication is administered as a cream directly to the affected skin region, but should not be used to treat oral, eye or vaginal infections. Discuss the limited butenafine side effects with a doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.

Skin Discoloration

Treatment with butenafine can cause minor skin discoloration as a side effect in certain patients. The skin at the site of application site can develop a rash that may appear red or inflamed, explains Drugs.com, a peer-reviewed drug information website. These side effects can develop shortly after applying butenafine and may progressively subside several hours after treatment.

Burning or Stinging

Sensations of burning or stinging can occur at the site of application in certain patients using butenafine, warn doctors at The Mayo Clinic. These sensations can feel uncomfortable, but typically last for only a few minutes. Contact a doctor if burning or stinging sensations persist or are accompanied by the appearance of fluid-filled blisters at the butenafine application site.

Itching

In controlled clinical trials for this medication, approximately 1 percent of patients reported experiencing itching at the site of butenafine application following treatment, explains Daily Med, a website established by the National Institutes of Health that provides high-quality information about currently marketed drugs. Itching sensations can become severe and may cause patients to scratch at the affected skin. Excessive scratching can lead to further skin irritation, swelling or redness in certain patients. These side effects of butenafine prove temporary and will subside once treatment with this medication has completed.
