4 Ways to Treat ALS

1. Detoxify Your Body

Research indicates that those with ALS may have been exposed to greater amounts of environmental toxins, or have difficulty clearing toxins from the body. Take steps to support your body's ability to eliminate toxins and metabolic waste products. This is essential for those living with ALS. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily to support kidney function and flush toxins out. Ensure adequate fiber intake by eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day to support your digestive system and bind toxins in the intestines for elimination. Consider adding a psyllium fiber supplement to your diet for additional fiber. Avoid alcohol, cigarette smoke, pesticides and hormones (look for organic, free-range meat and poultry) and any other environmental chemicals whenever possible.

2. Protect Yourself with Antioxidants

Free radical damage plays a role in many diseases, including ALS. Protect your nervous system by eating a variety of different colored fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. These foods are high in powerful antioxidants to protect your cells and tissues. Also be sure to consume additional antioxidants for added protection. Vitamins C, E and the B-complex vitamins are the "staples" of any dietary supplement regimen and are absolutely essential for the brain and nervous system. Consider pine bark and green tea extracts, as well as curcumin, which also acts as an anti-inflammatory and can help to ease muscle and joint pain. Remember that consuming a combination of antioxidants is more beneficial than consuming only one type. Always discuss taking any new dietary supplements with your doctor, especially if you are taking any prescription medications.

3. Supplement with CoEnzyme Q-10 and Alpha Lipoic Acid

CoEnzyme Q-10 is an important nutrient that can be very helpful for those with ALS. CoQ10 provides antioxidant protection for the brain and nervous system and also supports the production of energy in the mitochondria of the cells (the tiny energy-producers in the cells). Alpha Lipoic Acid is another powerful antioxidant that protects all tissues in the body, including nerve cells. Alpha Lipoic Acid also helps to regenerate other antioxidants, including Vitamins E and C, making it even more important for free radical protection throughout the body. Supplement with a CoQ10 product in a chewable tablet form and Alpha Lipoic Acid in capsule or powder to ensure adequate absorption.

4. Only One Prescription Medication

There is only one prescription drug at this time that has been approved for treatment of ALS--riluzole (Rilutek). Those with ALS have high levels of the neurotransmitter glutamate, and high levels of glutamate can damage nerve cells, particularly those responsible for muscle function. The medication currently approved for ALS treatment works to reduce the levels of glutamate in the nervous system. It has been shown to reduce the progression of ALS to allow the person more time in the early stages of the disease, when their symptoms are less severe. Speak with your doctor about this medication and whether it is appropriate for you.
