A wound is a break in the structure of tissue cells, resulting in a tear or abrasion to the skin. Herbal remedies have been used throughout history to treat and heal wounds. Some of these healing herbs can be found in your house and are also available from health food stores.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a common household plant and is part of the succulent family. The aloe plant is used externally for burns, cuts and scrapes. Polysaccharides found in aloe vera help to heal the skin due to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial properties and its ability to stimulate the immune system. For burns you can simply break off a leaf of the plant and apply the aloe vera gel found inside the leaf to your burn. You can also purchase aloe vera in ointment and cream form.
Arnica Montana
Arnica montana is a perennial flowering plant used for injuries such as sprains, bruises and muscle aches. Arnica flowers are used to treat wounds, aid in the reduction of inflammation and help to promote healing due to their antimicrobial properties. Arnica should be applied topically to the affected area. Never apply arnica to an open wound. Arnica is available in topical creams, ointments and oil.
Calendula Officinalis
Part of the daisie, chrysanthemum and ragweed family, Calendula officinalis helps to speed up the healing of wounds due to its flavanoid or antioxidant content. Calendula also speeds up the healing process by increasing blood flow to the damaged area. Calendula is applied topically to the wounded area and can be found in creams and ointments.
Slippery Elm/Ulmus Fulva
Slippery elm is a medium size tree native to North America. The inner bark of the tree is used for healing purposes. Traditionally, slippery elm has been used to treat upper respiratory infections, sore throat, gastrointestinal diseases and externally for the healing of wounds. Never apply slippery elm to open wounds. Slippery elm can be found in powder form.
