The liver is the largest internal organ of the human body, responsible for many important biological tasks. The liver detoxifies the body by removing unwanted poisons and toxins, and processes macro-nutrients and vitamins needed for well-being. The use of herbs for supporting health and reducing complications has been used for thousands of years because they contain powerful properties supported by nature.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle has been used for centuries in Europe for its ability to promote liver health. Clinical studies from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) report that milk thistle has protective properties on the liver and supports healthy function. The most biologically active component of the milk thistle plant is silymarin, an extract from the seeds. The NCCAM studies suggest milk thistle benefits the liver by promoting growth of new cells, preventing oxidation damage, and decreasing inflammation. The herb is also typically used to treat diseases of the liver--such as cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis--because of its medicinal properties.

Licorice Root

The use of licorice root for medicinal purposes originates from Eastern and Western traditional medicine. Research from the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) claims licorice root has beneficial liver properties. Researchers suggest that licorice root contains an active component called glycyrrhizin that helps reduce the risk of cirrhosis and other liver diseases.

Dandelion Root

Dandelion root and leaf is used widely throughout the world to treat liver ailments and liver disease, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Researched studies suggest dandelion root promotes liver health because it restores liver cells and function. Dandelion can also detoxify the liver by reducing side effects caused by medications that are metabolized by the liver. Other studies by the NIH also suggest that dandelion has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that help support liver health and relieve symptoms commonly associated with liver disease. A recent NIH study reported improved liver function in people suffering from hepatitis after taking dandelion root.

Bupleurum

Bupleurum is an herb that originates in China and has been used for thousands of years for its liver-healing properties, according to the UMMC. Studies claim that bupleurum holds anti-inflammatory properties and can be beneficial for treating disorders of the liver. One UMMC study showed a significantly reduced risk of liver cancer in people suffering from cirrhosis when taking a supplement containing the herb bupleurum.
