Fertility, or the ability to conceive, requires many hormones in just the right balance at each stage of the process. The most important fertility hormones are the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), the luteinizing hormone (LH) and human chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG), according to Baby Hopes. When just one of these hormone levels is too low, conception efforts can be derailed. Herbal remedies can help increase these hormones, but fertility concerns should be discussed with a medical professional, as they may signal underlying conditions.
Very few scientific studies support the effectiveness of herbs for increasing fertility hormones. However, herbal remedies have been used for thousands of years by many cultures and can be a safe supplement to modern medicine if used correctly and with a physician's approval. Do not start taking an herb without discussing it with your physician, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition.
Chasteberry
Chasteberry, also called Vitex, comes from the Chaste Tree indigenous to southwestern Europe and western Asia. It has been used for over 2,500 years to treat gynecological problems throughout ancient and modern Europe, according to Dr. Beatrix Roemheld-Hamm in her study "Chasteberry," published in the September 2005 edition of "American Family Physician." Roemheld-Hamm found that, in low doses, chasteberry caused a decrease in estrogen levels and an increase in progesterone. However, she states that more scientific evidence is required before recommending chasteberry as a fertility treatment.
Dong Quai
Dong Quai, also known as Chinese Angelica and "female ginseng," is one of the most popular remedies in Chinese medicine for treatment of women's health conditions, including painful menstruation, lack of menstruation, fatigue and childbirth recovery, according to Medline Plus. The herb may have properties similar to estrogen and help increase the hormone in women with deficiencies, although there is not enough research to support the use of Dong Quai as a fertility supplement.
Licorice Root
Licorice root is a popular herbal remedy used to treat numerous health conditions, including hormonal imbalances. The chemicals in licorice may stimulate the adrenal glands and help balance estrogen and progesterone levels, according to Holistic Online. Licorice should not be taken by those with heart conditions, especially high blood pressure. It may also cause a decrease in potassium levels in some cases.
False Unicorn
False Unicorn is found primarily in the southern United States and east of the Mississippi River. It is traditionally used to treat reproductive issues in women by normalizing the fertility hormones, although it may also be beneficial to male fertility hormones as well. The Herbal Resource explains that False Unicorn may improve ovary function and help regulate menstrual cycles. This herb may also help prevent miscarriages, although herbs should never be taken during pregnancy without first consulting a medical professional.
