Massage therapy has been practiced in many different cultures for thousands of years as a way to relax and calm the muscles in the body, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. In the last century, as massage therapy has become more popular around the world, the number of tools available to help massage therapists do their jobs more effectively and efficiently has increased as well.

Massage Table

One of the most common tools used in massage therapy is the massage table, which is specially designed to allow a person to feel relaxed during a massage as well as allow the massage therapist to access all parts of body as necessary. Most massage tables feature some sort of head rest that allows the client to lie face-down with their face or head supported in a more comfortable position. Some tables also offer extensions for the arms to allow easier access and comfort.

Tennis Ball

A tennis ball or similar soft, flexible ball can be used to target problem areas, such as the back or buttocks, according to Northwestern Health Sciences University. Massage therapists often use tennis or other balls to create centralized pressure in certain trouble spots on the body.

Lotions and Oils

Many massage therapists use lotions or oils not only to help make the massage more smooth and enjoyable, but also to relax the patient. Studies have shown that use of essential oils and lotions, particularly those containing lavender, can help patients relax, improve sleep quality and lead to a more stable mood, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Hot Stones

To target specific areas of the body, massage therapists may use hot stones. Flat, smooth stones are heated in water, and used to provide relief to trouble areas and loosen up muscles in preparation for a massage, according to the University of New Hampshire Health Services. Cold stones also may be used in conjunction with hot stone therapy to improve circulation. People who are pregnant, or have high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes should check with their doctor before receiving a hot stone massage.

Hand Tools

Many different variations of massage tools exist on the market that can help with general massage relaxation and stimulation, but often don't provide deep muscle relief, according to Northwestern Health Sciences University. Some hand tools include the Ma Roller, a cylindrical tool with crevices and extensions, which is rolled up and down the back and other parts of the body with light pressure. Wooden knob devices also are used often because of their smooth, round texture. They often resemble toy "jacks", and are used to apply pressure to muscles and joints. These devices also can be made of plastic.
