A visit to the dermatologist is important if you suffer from chronic or severe acne breakouts. However, if you have mild acne or an occasional pimple, you may benefit from a simple and inexpensive at-home treatment. Try several different home remedies to find out which one works best with your skin type.
Lemon Juice
Lemon is a naturally acidic astringent and cleanser. According to dermatologist Dr. Joachim W. Fluhr, cited by Karger.com, the skin forms a protective barrier known as the acid mantle on the top layer of the epidermis. This barrier protects the pores from bacteria. Lemon helps cleanse the skin without upsetting the pH balance which can destroy the acid mantle. To treat your acne with lemon juice, saturate a cotton ball with freshly squeezed or bottled lemon juice and dab it on the affected skin.
Honey Aspirin Mask
Aspirin contains acetylsalicylic acid which reduces the inflammation and redness of a pimple. Aspirin particles also exfoliate the skin to help unclog pores. Crush an uncoated aspirin tablet and mix it with a couple drops of water or honey to make a paste. Dab it on a zit, leave it on for about 15 minutes, and rinse for a quick and easy spot-treatment. To treat your entire face, crush about four tablets and mix with a tablespoon or two of honey. Apply all over your face, leave on for about 20 minutes and rinse. Honey acts as an antimicrobial (killing acne-causing bacteria) and a moisturizer.
Egg Mask
Egg whites help tighten the skin while reducing the swelling and redness of blemishes on the face. To make an egg white mask, begin by separating the yolk from the egg white. Whip the egg white with a fork. Wash your face and hands, and apply the egg white to your face with your fingers. Allow the egg white to dry, then rinse with water.
