Kayaking is a boating activity that gives you the opportunity to paddle through a river relentlessly or slowly drift down, relaxing and enjoying the scenery. It can be for those who love racing, those who love beautiful views and simply a fun activity for kids. Ensuring your kayak is the perfect length for you can help when purchasing a new one.

Instructions

Step 1

Determine where the kayak will be used, in addition to how it will be used. Kayaks can be as long as 17 feet and as short as 9 feet. Longer kayaks can be used for more storage, while shorter kayaks can turn much more easily. A good length for a beginner is 9 to 12 feet long, while kayaks that are used for tours are as long as 17 feet. Generally, the longer distance you will be traveling, the longer you will want the kayak to be.

Step 2

Decide where you will be storing the kayak and make the purchase based off of how much space you have to store the boat. If you know you will only have enough room to house a 10-foot kayak, do not buy a longer one, regardless of preference.

Step 3

Enter and exit each kayak that you want to consider buying to determine how difficult it is to get out of. Due to safety, you should be able to get out of a kayak fairly easily, but you also do not want to be slipping out of it consistently. Contrary to popular belief, a larger person should not be buying a longer kayak. Larger people should buy kayaks that are wider and taller.

Tips and Warnings

  • Be sure to consider what type of clothes you will be wearing when using the kayak.
  • When kayaking, you should always wear a life jacket or another form of flotation aid.
